1. What is a Letter of Authority?
A Letter of Authority (LOA) is a formal document that gives Megna Carta Marketing Ltd permission to contact your current energy and/or water suppliers on your behalf. This is a standard practice in the UK utilities industry and is required by most suppliers before they will release account information or discuss contractual matters with a third party.
The LOA is a widely recognised document within the utilities sector and is fully compliant with Ofgem guidelines and UK data protection regulations.
2. Why We Need It
Energy and water suppliers have strict data protection policies and will not discuss your account details — including tariff rates, contract end dates, or consumption data — with anyone other than the account holder or an authorised representative.
By signing an LOA, you enable us to:
- Obtain your current contract terms, pricing, and end dates
- Access your half-hourly (HH) and non-half-hourly (NHH) consumption data
- Request quotations from multiple suppliers on your behalf
- Identify billing errors and raise disputes with your current supplier
- Negotiate improved terms and pricing across your utilities portfolio
Without a signed LOA, our ability to act in your best interest is significantly restricted.
3. What the LOA Allows Us to Do
✅ Permitted Actions
- Obtain account information, tariff details, and contract end dates from your current supplier(s)
- Request consumption data (historical usage) to produce accurate market comparisons
- Obtain quotes from alternative suppliers across the whole market
- Submit contract change requests and switching documentation on your behalf
- Raise formal disputes, billing queries, and objections with your supplier
- Liaise with your supplier regarding meter-related enquiries
4. What the LOA Does NOT Allow
❌ Prohibited Actions
- Signing or executing supply contracts on your behalf without your explicit written approval
- Making payments or authorising direct debits on your account
- Changing account holder details, bank account information, or billing addresses
- Transferring ownership of your account to any third party
- Sharing your data with any party other than your current or prospective Suppliers for the purpose of obtaining quotations
You remain in full control of your accounts at all times. No supply contract will be executed without your explicit approval and signature (or equivalent electronic consent).
5. Duration & Revocation
Your Letter of Authority remains in effect for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of signing, unless revoked earlier in writing.
You may revoke the LOA at any time by providing written notice to us via email or post. Revocation takes effect within seven (7) business days of receipt. We will promptly notify all relevant suppliers that our authority has been withdrawn.
We will contact you prior to the expiry of the LOA to confirm whether you wish to renew it for a further period.
6. Data & Privacy
All information obtained under the LOA is processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Your data will only be used for the purposes stated within this LOA and our Privacy Policy.
We will never sell, rent, or share your data with any third party not directly involved in the provision of your utilities services without your prior written consent.
